Internship at Kweekvijver Noord
Commissioned by the Municipality of Leeuwarden in the Netherlands and broadcast on Omroep Fryslân, Kiekes Dagjournaal was a daily TV journal during Leeuwarden’s year as European Capital of Culture. Across 260 episodes and over 700 cultural stories, we gave viewers a personal look into the region’s vibrant events — bringing local culture to life, one day at a time.
Challenge
Capturing a year of culture in motion
In 2018, Leeuwarden was named the European Capital of Culture — a year packed with cultural events, stories, and people across the entire province of Friesland.
Commissioned by the Municipality of Leeuwarden and produced in collaboration with regional broadcaster Omroep Fryslân, the goal was to make this cultural year visible and accessible to a broad audience.
With hundreds of events happening throughout the region, the challenge was to bring the essence of the year to television in a way that felt personal, lively, and inviting — while raising awareness and encouraging participation.
Strategy
The solution: a daily news-style television format called Kiekes Dagjournaal. Every weekday, for an entire year, a 3-minute program was broadcast on Omroep Fryslân, highlighting three cultural items or moments connected to that week’s events.
Each episode brought the audience closer to the heart of Friesland’s cultural scene — from music festivals and art exhibitions to street performances and community traditions. The format combined interviews with locals, on-the-ground footage of events, and lighthearted presenting to make culture feel approachable and relevant to everyone.
Our team produced, filmed, edited, and delivered new episodes every single day, making this one of the most consistent and intensive productions of the year.
Ids was responsible for scouting story ideas, preparing and organizing shoots, filming, editing, presenting the items, and staying in close contact with various stakeholders and event organizers.
Results
Over the course of the year, 260 episodes were produced and broadcast on regional TV, featuring more than 700 unique cultural stories and interviews.
The program reached millions of viewers and played a key role in raising visibility for Friesland’s cultural capital year. It succeeded in what it set out to do: bring people closer to local culture, spark interest in regional events, and create a lasting audiovisual record of one of the most important cultural years in the region’s history.
