Take-home mode uses your actual numbers. Salary and freelance modes provide a full-year planning estimate for a Japanese tax resident aged 20โ59, without dependants, special tax credits or overseas income. Freelancers enter profit after business expenses, before personal taxes and insurance. Living expenses are not deducted from taxable income.
Income tax uses the 2026 annual basic and employment deductions, progressive rates and 2.1% reconstruction surtax. The December 2026 reform applies to the 2026 annual calculation; this is not a monthly payroll withholding calculation. Payroll-table rounding and special circumstances can change the final bill. A manually entered income-tax amount replaces the estimate.
Salary pension is approximated at 9.15% with the standard-remuneration minimum and cap; actual payslip bands may differ. Freelance pension starts at ยฅ17,920/month for April 2026โMarch 2027. Replace it if an approved exemption, age or coverage arrangement changes your payment. Company pension already includes the basic pension โ do not add both.
The optional Tokyo employee health example uses 9.85% health insurance plus 0.23% child-support contribution, split equally with the employer, for someone under 40. Ages 40โ64 also have care insurance; enter the correct payslip amount instead. Freelance National Health Insurance is entered from your municipality bill because rates, household size, prior-year income and reductions vary. Salary estimates include 0.5% employment insurance for general businesses.
Resident tax is entered from your bill rather than guessed from this month's income. It is generally assessed on the previous calendar year's income where you lived on 1 January. New arrivals may have low bills now and higher bills later. Put money aside for that change; 0 today does not mean 0 next year. If your income is seasonal or you arrived partway through the year, use actual tax amounts or check your annual calculation with the tax office.
This is a budget planner, not a tax return. It excludes business/consumption tax, foreign-tax and treaty calculations, bonuses, tax credits, dependant deductions and age-specific exceptions. For an exact budget, replace estimates with your payslip and notices.
